Finding the right social media fit
I recently gave a social media presentation to a group of small business owners. The topic, selecting the right social media for your business.
For those who are not tech savvy, or fans of the latest whizbangs and widgets, social media can be a puzzle. So many mediums to choose from can be overwhelming, to say the least.
The world of social media. So many choices, so little time.
So how do you choose? How do you sift through the swirling vortex of 1s and 0s in cyberspace?
My advice is to start with a plan.
Ask yourself:
What are your goals, what do you expect to gain from social media? Brand awareness? Customer retention? Customer service? Sales funnel?
While social media platforms may be free, your time is valuable. How much time do you want to invest in your social media image?
Look at your business model? Is your product of visual interest or are you selling services? A visual business such as an art gallery might do well on Pinterest or Instagram. While a service such as tax preparation might excel on LinkedIn or Facebook. A restaurant might be able to use both Pinterest, FourSqare, Urban Spoon and Yelp. Knowing how you want to present yourself and your business will be a key factor in selecting the right social media platform to utilize.
However, being comfortable in a platform speaks volumes. You could create a presence on all of the mediums I mentioned above but if you are not comfortable using them, you will not. I suggest creating a personal profile and getting to know the medium before you put your business out there. Get some interaction going, a sense of community and be consistent.
In social media, consistency is key. It is better to have a consistent presence than to have an abandoned profile your potential customers could be viewing. So, knowing how will you maintain your presence is huge.
A few quick tips for posting:
Be nice.
Be pleasant.
Be genuine.
Don’t be “salesy”
Respond promptly.
Pay attention to the details.
When posting events, remember – the 5 “Ws” – who, what, when, where and why.
Post as if your mother were reading every line.
My mama always told me, if you do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything.
As a final note: if you plan on having someone else maintain your image, make sure they know your business inside and out and that you trust them, not only online, but with your reputation. It is your business they represent. That is a whole other can of worms. Maybe that will be a post for another time.

Hello Again Readers…
It’s been a while since I’ve written in the public forum. I am sure I am a little rusty, but hey, let’s see where this leads.
Since my exodus from the paper, I have had several people ask me to write again. It’s not like I actually stopped writing, I do it every day at work, it is just a little different. Now I am the one sending out the press releases instead of wading through them to see what is noteworthy.
For those of you who wanted me to blog, I hope I don’t disappoint you. I’m sure a lot of my ramblings will talk about my faith, if that bothers you, change the channel. For those of you who know me, I am who I am and I make no apologies for that. If you know me, you also know I’m not perfect and I don’t claim to be. I have done many, many things that I am not proud of but I can only hope that I have learned from them. I may share some of those lessons as we travel along this path, we’ll see.
Sometimes I have been called the Queen of Too Much Information so be aware that I will say things that may you may not want to know. I have tried to improve with age. I have been told that if you don’t want to know my opinion then don’t ask me. I don’t that was meant as a compliment, but I took it as one. In any case, I will do what my hubby, Andy, usually does when he meets someone new. I will apologize before-hand.
Here goes. Dear readers, I will at some point offend your sensibilities, for that I apologize now.
Just so you know my husband is the King of Too Much Information and the Duke of Inappropriate Conversation. He has a good heart, but there is no stop between his brain and his mouth. I am sure he will be the topic of much conversation. He is a great source of material. I’m just glad he loves me and knows me well enough to understand my ramblings.
Many people say I am too nice and I always look at life with an optimistic attitude. To that I say, I am diplomatic, not necessarily nice but I try. Life is too short to spend it angry, I’d rather laugh. As for my outlook on life, I have an odd perspective, one that usually takes some explaining, and that can make things interesting.
Well, I hope I can share some laughter and enough strange perspective with this writing endeavor to keep you interested. Thanks for tuning in and not changing the channel, yet. I’ll post again soon.
Thanks for reading.
